A new solar farm has been granted approval on land near a former coal mining site.
The project in Seaham received the backing of Durham County Council’s planning committee.
Developer Environmena will construct the facility on land west of Admiralty Way, with construction expected to last 16 weeks once it commences later this year.
Kevin Shaw, county councillor for the nearby area of Dawdon, described the development as a significant advancement for the site.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the solar farm will operate for 40 years, after which the equipment will be dismantled and the land restored.

Challenging Past
At the planning meeting, Shaw stated, “This development is situated just 100 yards from the former Dawdon Colliery.
“For 100 years, coal was extracted here, causing severe environmental damage.
“I would much rather see this development progress than reflect on the site’s past.
“It was a dreadful environment to grow up in, and when you consider the minimal environmental impact of this project and its benefits, it’s the clear choice.”
Some councillors expressed concerns about the farm’s visual impact. Councillor Doug Oliver, representing Lanchester, remarked that the “mix of metal and glass on open green space is generally unpopular and has consequences.”
However, he acknowledged that his concerns were surpassed by “the urgent need for green energy.”
Environmena noted that it had collaborated closely with local businesses and authorities throughout the application process.
